Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Server Installation
Canonical is a publisher of Ubuntu Linux has released Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Long Term Support) Server code-named as Focal Fossa on 23 April, 2020. As we know LTS version (Long Term Support) is released every two years and gets support and patches until April 2025 and EOL (End of Life) would be 2030. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ships with latest and greatest updated open source applications, some of them are Linux Kernel 5.4, glibc 2.31, OpenJDK 11, rustc 1.41, GCC 9.3, Python 3.8.2, ruby 2.7.0, php 7.4, perl 5.30, golang 1.13, PostgreSQL 12,SAMBA 4.11 and built-in support for WireGuard VPN. Please visit for more details of Release Notes. In this page, we will see the installation steps of the latest release of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with screenshots.

Installation Steps of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Server.

Step 1 Download Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64 bit only available.
Step 2 - Boot with DVD/USB or ISO file
Insert bootable media DVD/USB or ISO file and start the system after changing the booting sequence in BIOS or UEFI (Unified Extended Firmware Interface). Installer take you to the Language selection dialogue, use UP, Down and Enter to select the language.

Step 3 - Keyboard Configuration.
Select the Identify Keyboard, this will help you to discover correct keyboard layout for you.

Step 4 - Network Connections Settings.
Network connections screen will show all available network interfaces. Please note this can be done later as well to configure static IP address.

Step 5 Configure proxy
This is the optional configuration. Set proxy setting, if you have proxy server in place. Otherwise leave it blank and hit "Done".

Step 6 - Configure Ubuntu archive mirror
This will be selected automatically. You may overwrite the settings if required.

Step 7 Storage configuration
"Configure a guided storage layout" or "create a custom one". Here, we have selected Custom storage layout for manual partitions of filesystem manually.
- Use an entire disk - This is for new user and simplest way to partition your filesystem automatically, simply jump to "step 12" from here.
- Set up this disk as an LVM group - This is for advance user only.
- Custom storage layout - This option provides flexibility to partitions filesystem. 
Note: For those who are interested for "Custom Storage Layout" filesystem partitions, keep reading below.

Step 8 - Storage Configuration
Next few steps shows manual partitions of disks as below.
/boot - 500MB
SWAP - 2GB
/ - Remaining Space given to root partition.
Note: You may create different partitions for /var and /home if required.
Select the drive highlighted below and select "Add GPT Partition".

Step 9 - Creating "/boot" partition

Step 11 - Creating "/" partition

Step 12 Check and verify the partitions summary page and hit "Done".

Step 13 All the disks selected will be formatted (data will be deleted). Hit "Continue" .

Step 14 - User Profile setup (Username, hostname & password).

Step 15 - It is recommended to select SSH Server installation options to take a server access remotely.

Step 16 You may select specific service to install as shown below if required else you may ignore it and hit "Done".

Step 17 - Installation started.
During the installation you can select the "View full log" to see what is going on in the background.

Step 18 - Installation complete.
Reboot your Ubuntu Server, also remove the installation media if prompted.

Step 19 Login with the username and password created during installation and your are done with the installation of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Server.
